Being situated in a prime location on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, the Emergency Department of Ruby General Hospital is the busiest in the city catering to the maximun number of emergency & trauma cases daily. This has urged the need to establish our own Blood Centre, which will support 24 x 7 uninterrupted Blood supply to its valued patients despite all odds. The Oncology unit, the Neuro-spine and Gynecology departments do have a massive demand of life saving blood and components for its patients. The journey of Ruby Blood Centre began from 7th February, 2024.

  • All Efforts at Ruby Blood Centre exclusively focuses on collection of blood from non remunerated, voluntary, low risk and healthy blood donors both during in house exchange donation and in outdoor camps.
  • All efforts are directed towards encouraging and retaining adequate number of repeat donors. Appropriate recognition and felicitation for them is practiced for their contribution towards the society.
  • Pre-donation counseling by trained staff is practiced along with maintaining privacy and confidentiality. Stringent screening policy is followed by the physicians for the safety of both the donor and the recipient.

PRBC transfusion is associated with an increasing risk of infectious and noninfectious adverse events, the most common among which are non hemolytic febrile transfusion reactions, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allo-immunization and platelet refractoriness observed in multi transfused patients, and transmission of leuko-tropic viruses.

One of the strategies commonly used to prevent post transfusion complications is leuko-depletion, i.e., a process by which the white blood cells (WBC) are intentionally reduced by almost 99.99% to PRBC.

STERILE CONNECTING DEVICE

Sterile connecting devices are used for making aliquots of whole blood bags for pediatric patients as per the prescription of the doctors, and re-use of the remaining part of these blood bags for subsequent transfusion to the same child to avoid possible risk of multiple donor exposure.

The device helps minimizing misuse of blood and enhances full utilization of each blood unit in pediatric cases. This is helpful for rare group.

(SCD-II) accomplishes quick and safe tubing connections that maintain a functionally closed system. It provides a new level of speed and assurance of quality, regardless of whether wet or dry tubing is to be connected.

APHERESIS : THE GAME CHANGER IN TRANSFUSION MEDICINE

In donor Apheresis a healthy person donates blood using the Apheresis machine, which is programmed to collect the desired blood component – either Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, platelets, or plasma. The component can be stored and distributed to hospitals, or to be given to a patient when in need.

The Terumo Penpol Optia Apheresis Machine is highest in class and efficacy in harvesting and of Single Donor Platelets – performing Plasma Pheresis and also in therapeutic procedures.

TTI- A PROMISE OF SAFE BLOOD FOR ALL

Safe blood transfusion is not only about the charges or equipments involved in the entire procedure, but it’s the TTI methods practiced for the ultimate safety of the blood products so that each patient is transfused with the safest blood.

ECL

Electro Chemi Luminescence procedure is designed to give more sensitive and specific results for critical and multi transfusion patients, neonatals and all transplant patients .

With the development of Transfusion Medicine ,more doctors are considering ECL test as the NEW BASIC for modern Blood Centres as transfusion reactions are much lesser and sometimes zero.

NAT TEST

Worldwide, the NAT Test is considered as the GOLD standard of TTI and considered to deliver the most accurate TTI results

Ruby Blood Centre promises to produce and supply 100% ECL NAT tested blood for the Hospital. NAT tested blood is available for all patients who wish to receive the same.

BLOOD CENTRE QC MANAGEMENT

  • Quality control procedures in Blood Centres are necessary to ensure the quality of the results originating from the TTI and Serology tests responsible for serological screening. International and National recommendations indicate that quality management systems must necessarily adopt both Internal and External quality controls to ensure 100% safety of issued blood and blood products.
  • Ruby Blood Centre is performing QC on a daily basis in its own lab and also sending samples to outside centres on regular intervals for test. We have enrolled for 2 external QC as EQAS and BQAS.

      • The first one is with EQAS, Jaipur and the other with RED CROSS, Delhi. Within the city, we have a third party tie-up with one of the reputed labs in Kolkata- ARICA DIAGNOSTICS.
      We have also applied for participation in the Haemovigilance Programme of India and procedures are in progress..

      BLOOD AND COMPONENT STORAGE FOR SUPPLY OF BEST QUALITY BLOOD PRODUCTS

      Another parameter of Quality blood Products and Good Transfusion Practice depends on storage and handling of the same in a safe manner. For this purpose, Ruby Blood Centre is adequately equipped with Blood Bank refrigerators and freezing units for component storage.
